Thinking about a trip around the world? Not sure how to start? Not sure if it’s possible?

For an empowering and informative introduction to long-term, independent international travel, and for a head start on planning your own dream trip around the world, come to one of Edward Hasbrouck’s inspiring and educational seminars on “How to Travel Around the World.”

“I write and speak about travel as an aspect of life: something we do, not something we buy. There is an industry of companies and people who sell services to travellers, but travel is an activity, not an industry; an experience, not a product. We may pay for transportation and for places to sleep, just as we may pay for schooling, but we can’t buy experience any more than we can buy enlightenment — even if, in the best of worlds, travel sometimes brings us both. I abhor the commodification of travel, and I write and speak about how my readers and listeners can avoid it.”

Edward Hasbrouck wrote the books on around-the-world travel, and on travel and the Internet: The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World (5th edition, 2011) and The Practical Nomad Guide to the Online Travel Marketplace (2001). “A journalist and travel expert, Mr. Hasbrouck brings to the table in-depth knowledge of the travel industry,” says the Wall Street Journal.

The winner of a Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award for investigative reporting from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation, author, blogger, journalist, and consumer advocate Edward Hasbrouck is, “That rare person, the expert who’s willing to tell all.” (GNN Whole Internet Catalog). “An inside expert.” (Yahoo!). “A nationally renowned expert [on how to] get the best of the budget deals without getting burned.” (Tripod).

Edward has been around the world 3 times and visited all 50 U.S. states and more than 50 other countries. While updating the most recent edition of The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World, he spent 13 months on an 80,000-mile trip through 28 countries on 6 continents. While he’s an expert on airfares, he’s also travelled for months at a time by bicycle in recent years: across the USA and Canada, through Europe from Scotland to Serbia, and across Argentina.

“Customers are raving about the program saying you really knew your material and it was very interesting — you were a big hit! (Changes in Latitude, Boulder, CO)

“Wow! Great job…. Thank you so much for speaking to the group. We often get new members by doing these programs; this one brought in a record number of non-members. It was a great success.” (Sierra Club, Modesto, CA)

“I was at your talk and enjoyed it greatly… You compressed so much information into that relatively short time. I was impressed with your knowledge and recall.” (Hostelling International, Boston, MA)

“We (the older couple in the back), enjoyed your talk… Having backpacked for 2 1/2 months around Europe in 1970, we wish we knew then some of the things you were telling us. Appreciate your passion on the topic, your insight, and the eloquence of your presentation. Thanks for a wonderful evening.” (Stanford University, CA)

“It was a wonderful opportunity to hear first hand from a guy that has been three times around the world. Fascinating and informative, Edward made a very good presentation and also answered many questions.” (Get Lost Travel Books / World Travel Meetup, San Francisco, CA)

“One of our best meetings ever … extremely useful material and ideas … rave reviews from members.” (Bay Area Travel Writers, San Francisco, CA)

“Your talk to the whole huge crowd was perfect. And you were a delight to work with through and through.” (Sacramento Library Foundation)

“In one hour, Edward gave the most complete, well-rounded presentation of the current state of travel writing that I have ever heard. The audience was scribbling notes like mad. Edward’s eloquence and animation were in great form. Kudos!” (Tom Brosnahan, author of more than 40 guidebooks, co-founder and faculty member emeritus of the Society of American Travel Writers’ Institute for Travel Writing and Photography)

Edward is as comfortable discussing the practicalities and politics of world travel with the audience at a hackerspace in Berlin, a hostel in Honolulu, a hearing in the European or Canadian Parliament, or the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington.

Edward Hasbrouck’s seminars on “How to Travel Around the World” address how to get the time and money for extended travel, how to choose where to go, how to plan your budget and manage money on the road, and how to get around on your own and minimize culture shock. Edward explains the facts and widespread myths about travel safety and health, how airfares work, how and why international airfares are completely different from domestic airfares, and how to get the best set of airline tickets, at the best price, for a multi-stop journey.

From The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World: “World travel is fun. World travel is sexy. World travel is the ultimate trip. Independent world travel is the world’s best learning experience. It’s the best possible investment of time and money you can make in your own career or your children’s education…. World travel is easier than you think.”

Edward’s presentations on “The Internet As a Travel Tool” include how to navigate the virtual library of travel planning information on the Internet, consumer guidance on how to buy tickets and make travel reservations online, when the best deals are — and when they aren’t — online and where and how to find them, tips and tricks for accessing and using the Internet while you are traveling, and do’s and don’ts for consumer protection, privacy, and security.

From The Practical Nomad Guide to the Online Travel Marketplace (2001): “Don’t believe anything just because you read it on the Internet…. The Internet is the most effective medium in history for the rapid global propagation of rumor, myth, and false information.”

Edward’s talks on “Travel Writing” include tips, techniques, and advice for travel writers of all types, amateur and professional, whether you are writing to preserve your own travel memories, to share your travel stories with friends and family, for publication, for profit, or perhaps even in hopes of making a living at it.

Edward also speaks on Freedom to Travel, including how our right to travel is protected by the U.S. Constitution and international human rights treaties, the records that travel companies and governments keep about our travels (including what information they contain, why they are important, how they are used, and the need for better privacy protection for travel data), and the ways that governments in the USA and around the world are seeking to limit and control our right to travel.

In each of these presentations, Edward can give updates, tips, and advice on travel safety, security, and the latest changes in airport and airline procedures affecting travelers in the USA and the rest of the world since 11 September 2001. There’s time at each of these events for individual questions.

Edward’s latest trip around the world lasted 13 months and took him 80,000 miles to 6 continents, 28 countries, 30 U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces, and he has lots of stories, experiences, and travel lessons from the school of hard knocks to share.

In addition to his in-person appearances, Edward provides commentary as a travel expert and consumer advocate on news and public affairs broadcasts and talk shows, and on topical issues related to his travel reporting; his work with the Identity Project on travel-related human rights and civil liberties issues; and his work with other organizations and issues including the National Writers Union (writers’ rights), and Resisters.info (resistance to military conscription).
